Kristina Wissling was invited to a talk about "Origami in Space - Smart Design for space travel using origami folding techniques" and a practical workshop on origami mechanisms in the context of the innovation workshops in Bremen.
Solar sails, satellites and antennas must be designed in a certain way to get into space. Exploration robots must unfold these on distant planets to launch their missions. But for other orbital loads such the ATV, volume also means "less is more". For these everyday problems, the Japanese folding technology of Origami offers innovative solutions that have long been used in aerospace and product design in Asia and America. During a full-day event divided between a presentation on "Origami in Space" and a hands-on workshop section focused on Deployable Structures participants were shown how they can use this innovative and creative approach to their business.
The event was aimed to experts from the Bremen aerospace industry, who deal with product design and solutions for efficient use of space in their daily work. The participants, including engineers from various fields such as robotics, had the opportunity to learn more about the different origami folding techniques, construction methods and their applications in the aerospace industry at this innovation day. The event was specially designed for space applications. The lecture was then followed by the practical part, here the participants were able to transfer the basic theoretical knowledge into business practice.
The innovation workshops were a specific module of the brinno.net network coordinated by WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH. As part of the Innovation workshops, topics and problems were treated individually and practice-oriented. Company representatives work together with experts on solution approaches for business relevant questions. The aim of the innovation workshop was to develop concrete, realisable measures and approaches for companies.
The lecture "Origami in Space- Smart Design for Space using origami Folding Technique“ and the practical part about Origami Mechanisms with the focus on "Deployable Structures" was organized by the WFB- Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH /brinno.net, bremer innovationsnetzwerk. Participants included engineers from OHB, ASTRIUM and DLR.
After the event, Kristina Wißling was selected as a participant of the Social Space in Cologne and took part in selected lectures and "Behind the Scenes" guided tours. In addition, she was also invited to an exclusive event at the European Space Research and Technology Center ESTEC based in Noordwijk.
