Folding Technology: 3D Printing/ Filament Print
Material: Cotton, Felt
Location: Postcity, Talk FIS Stage

Kristina Wißling was invited to participate in the ORI*LAB Masterclass + Workshop as part of the Ars Electronica Festival for Art, Technology and Society in Linz.
An interdisciplinary team of participants with different interests and approaches from the fields of art, origami, architecture, engineering and Oribotics came from Australia, France, Denmark, Jerusalem, and Austria to experiment with new process techniques, manufacturing processes, and textile folding in combination with 3D printing and origami software.
The Ori Lab Masterclass began with the introduction of Natural ORI, a series of folding patterns that can be achieved by applying specific forces to sheet material.
Using a scanner, objects - including the participants themselves - were scanned to determine whether they could be packaged by ORI*. A custom made software solution and Grasshopper were then used to create folding patterns of the scanned objects. The folding patterns on textiles where then produced by using the supplied Niwashi 3D printer.
The Niwashi Printer, a large format 3D printer, was specifically designed and calibrated for this type of application to print on textiles with print dimensions of 1050 x1050 x70mm and 1.75mm filament print.
Through this simple principle of material bonding, the textiles form the flexible hinges, and the printed areas the rigid (but still/yet flexible) panels of a folded structure. Two materials were tested, cotton and felt, in neutral colours such as black, white and grey. Similar colours were used for filament printing.
The festival ended with a panel discussion entitled "On the Future of Folding," in which all participants of the Ars Electronica Futurelabs ORI* Lab Masterclass took part, answering questions from the audience and the presenter.
The Origami Masterclass has been organised by Ars Electronica Future Lab and Project Lead by Australien Artist Matthew Gardiner (ORI* Folding matter by code-the future of folding and technology)
This project was funded through the FWF PEEK Program and a research project of the Ars Electronica Futurelab.
The Research Institute is the Ars Electronica Futurelab, a global center for excellence with the core concerns of art, technology and society, including the backing of a global network of artists, industry, and resources will ensure success and a significant impact on artistic research globally and within Austria.
