Studio Kristina Wißling was asked by artist Frank Boelter to design and fold seven outdoor origami sculptures as part of a public art project commissioned by the foundation Wortelkamp - Im Tal.
By folding traditional shapes such as a paper ship, a house, an elephant, which are more likely to be used on a smaller scale with traditional origami paper, the scale of 1: 5 is significantly enlarged and objects in the landscape are staged as "large-format foldings". Squares of synthetic paper measuring 5m * 5m were used to fold the objects. The plastic coating of the paper provided sufficient stability and strength in the implementation and folding of the oversized paper sculptures which were also suitable for the short-term outdoor use of the temporary exhibition. Wooden substructures were used before the different sized origami figures for the outdoor sculpture park „Im Tal“ of the Wortelkamp Foundation were set up and constructed.
Most of our large-format folding sculptures are custom-made and are folded by hand. The monumental size of the Outdoor Origamis impresses even from a distance. See more Outdoor Paper Installations and Monumental Origami Demonstrations here.
